🔍What is a Skimming Device?
A skimming device is a small, often unnoticeable piece of hardware that criminals attach to legitimate card readers. These devices capture the data stored on your card's magnetic stripe, and in some cases, even your PIN, using hidden cameras or keypad overlays.
🛡️7 Tips to Prevent ATM Skimming and Card Fraud:
- Check the Card Reader: If the card slot looks loose, bulky, or misaligned, it could be a skimmer. Compare it to the nearby machines if possible.
- Wiggle the Card Slot: A legitimate card reader should feel secure. If it moves or feels off, don’t use it—report it immediately.
- Be Aware of Your Surroundings: Use ATMs in well-lit, high-traffic areas. Criminals are less likely to target machines in visible locations.
- Look for Hidden Cameras: Tiny cameras may be placed above the keypad to capture PINs. Always cover the keypad when entering your PIN.
- Report It: If something doesn’t feel right, walk away and use a different ATM. Report anything suspicious to the bank or authorities.
- Check the Keypad: Some criminals use keypad overlays to steal PINs. Gently pull at the keypad edges to check for anything unusual.
- Review Transactions Regularly: We recommend that you monitor your accounts often and report any unauthorized activity. Pro tip: Enroll in digital banking to make this easier!
